Today is Day 16 for me, and nothing much has changed since probably Day 10 or so. I have to admit although we live a very healthy lifestyle by Moving well, eating well and thinking well, doing the 21-Day Purification Program is one of the best decisions I have ever made. When I was in undergrad at the University of North Florida, my brother and I owned and operated a health food store in Ponte Vedra Beach and I tried several cleansing and detox products that we sold and I never completed any of them because it was such a bad experience with having an uneasy stomach most of the time during the different programs. This time is different, I feel great, lost weight and have had restful sleep since embarking on the lifestyle modification. I have been telling everyone I cross paths of about this amazing transformation from doing something so simple as changing the way you eat to achieve an infinite amount of life altering experiences. Whether you are looking to shed some pounds, have less aches and pains, decrease the amount of medication you are taking or just looking for something new, you can find it with this program. I am so glad that I decided to do this and it has been worth every sacrifice I have had to make along the way, although as I come near the end I don't consider them sacrifices! If I can do it with everything I have going on, anyone can! Come to the talk on March 13 @ 5:15pm to see what I am talking about! RSVP on our site! And remember, Move Well, Eat Well, and Think Well!!

Why do I need purification?
Purification, also known as detoxification, can help you remove natural toxins from your body and help maintain a healthy weight. We are exposed to external toxins everyday, including pollutants, pesticides, and chemicals. Internally our bodies produce waste byproducts as a result of normal metabolic function. Although your body is designed to rid itself of these toxins naturally, it can become overburdened. Purifcation offers your
body additional support to expel natural toxins and minimize your weight, which is important to maintaining your health and vitality.
Toxins can contribute to a wide range of conditions:
  • Stuffy head
  • Fatigue or difficulty sleeping
  • Digestion and other gastrointestinal problems
  • Food cravings and weight gain
  • Reduced mental clarity
  • Low libido
How do I determine my toxic load?
Your toxic load is the amount of toxins that your body needs to process. By answering the following questions, you may gain some insight as to your current toxic load.

Yes  NoDo you or have you eaten processed foods? Yes   NoDo you eat non-organic fruits and vegetables? Yes   NoDo you eat meat and poultry that are not free range? Yes   NoDo you consume genetically altered food? Yes   NoDo you or have you ever used artificial sweeteners? Yes   NoDo you drink soda? Yes   NoDo the foods you eat have preservatives, additives, dyes, or sweeteners added? Yes   NoDo you eat fast foods and/or eat out regularly? Yes   NoDo you charbroil or grill foods? Yes   NoDo you drink coffee regularly? Yes   NoDo you drink alcohol? Yes   NoDo you drink tap water? If the majority of your answers are "yes", then it is likely that your diet contributes significantly to your toxic load. Beyond diet, many external toxins, such as perfumes, cleaners, and pollution, add to your load. Your health care professional can help you assess your toxic load.

What are the benefits of purification?
A purification program can have a significant, positive effect on the biochemistry of the body while allowing natural toxins and byproducts of daily metabolism to be eliminated. By participating in a purification program, you may notice the following:
  • Improved weight management results
  • Increased energy/vitality
  • Better digestion
  • Less bloating
  • Clearer skin
  • Shinier hair
  • Better sleep
  • Clearer thinking
  • Disappearance or lessening of past conditions†
How is purification different than any other diet?
The Standard Process Purification Program is not a diet. It is a program that helps you live a healthier life by purifying, nourishing, and maintaining a healthy body and weight.

Our purification program emphasizes supplements and whole foods, particularly fruits and vegetables, while limiting high-calorie, refined foods and saturated fats. Nourishing yourself with nutrient-rich foods will provide the complex combination of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are needed to protect the body and promote optimal health.†

Whether you are deciding to start eating more vegetables, cut out fast foods or go gluten free, you do not want to start anything or stop anything cold turkey. In order to ensure your success throughout the year, you want to set up a system that you will be compliant with and not get discouraged before it's February.

We can easily get bored with resolutions, just like with other things you may have tried in the past. You get pumped up to start a work out plan, yet you find that after a few weeks you are burned out and just drop it completely. Maybe you want to cut out soda, so you just stop for a few months. One party and boom, right back in soda heaven. Seem like you?

If so, I have some great tips for you that will help you to succeed. Start slowly. Meaning, if you want to say, start eating more organic foods. GREAT! I think that is an excellent choice for you and your family. Start by choosing one item to go organic with, like your milk or your  eggs. So In the month of January, you integrate organic milk into your household. This will give you and your family the ability to get used to it and make necessary changes or tweaks (i.e. brands, flavors, etc.). This also is a great way to ease any changes into your budget if your particular change would effect your bottom line.

Once you've integrated your first change in January, add an additional new item in February. Therefore, by the end of 2012, you will have introduce 12 new organic items into your LIFESTYLE, vs. your diet. See the change? You will be much more likely to keep this up and be more excited about the changes, if you and your family even notice!

If your resolution is to exercise more, then you can take this idea and "run" with it! Ha, get it? Okay, putting my pathetic joke aside, consider your current athletic level. Do you exercise at all? Do you play golf, but no other form or exercise? How much do you want to add to your regimen.  If you are a pretty sedentary individual but want to START exercising, you'll need to choose one exercise, i.e. a 10 minute daily walk. Do this for a month. Once you have integrated this new exercise as part of your daily life, it will then become part of your lifestyle.

Changing your lifestyle is what your goal of a successful resolution should be. Afterall, you are trying to improve the quality of your life. By going slow, taking your changes one step at a time, you are allowing yourself to change your lifestyle and therefore improve your overall quality of life. Best of luck!

Several ways to prevent sickness and promote wellness

Do you ever wonder why it is that when the flu, colds, or other illnesses are going around there are always some people in your office, school or even home that don’t “catch” it?  How could that be?  The answer is simple.  Immune system health.  When the body’s immune system is optimally functioning it can ward off any foreign organisms that cause dis-ease or illnesses.

The Immune system, although a highly complex system, is fairly simple to control and maintain without much assistance.  It comes down to simply prevention and wellness care.  You will see that I talk about preventative and wellness care a lot throughout my articles.  This is the basis of what health care should truly be about.  Versus the “sick” care idea that is unfortunately what we as a society are getting currently.  In today’s society, the way that our healthcare is taken care of usually consists of someone not feeling well, going to their primary care physician or a walk-in clinic, getting a prescription for something which relieves the symptoms.  You are sick, you seek medical attention reversely it should be that you go in for check-ups to ensure you are maintaining your wellness status of health care, and we utilize medicines when absolutely needed, for true sickness or emergency situations.

The immune system is made up primarily of your white blood cells that work as your primary line of defense against foreign organisms.  If you are eating unhealthy foods, living a sedentary lifestyle, not allowing yourself proper sleep, and living with emotional and chemical stressors, your immune system cannot function at 100%.  The first step would be to start taking control of your own health by decreasing your chemical stressors such as cigarette smoking, alcohol and toxins around you, be it in your make-up, cleaners or other products.  Next, you can slow down your life by doing what you can, to control your emotional stressors, believe it or not, this can make a pretty big impact on your immune system health.  Get up and get out!  That’s right, even a ten minute walk in the morning or in the evening can make a difference.  You are what you eat.  Your body utilizes the vitamins and minerals made up from the foods and beverages you choose to put into your body.  If you are choosing unhealthy options, you aren’t giving your body the advantage to function optimally with quality foods that it uses to function your brain, immune system, blood stream, nervous system, organs, cells and tissues.  Hydrate!  Water is your friend!

Lastly would be to understand that your immune system is one part of the complex matrix that is your body.  Your immune system is ultimately controlled by your central nervous system.  If your brain cannot get the needed messages to every area of your body; eyes, lungs, stomach, fingers, arteries or even skin then they will conversely react and malfunction as a result.  The brain sends these important messages to the body through the spinal cord and out the vertebral column.  That simple.  If there is any interference in this communication, the result is dysfunction.  The organs, tissues or cells directly related to that effected area will either function below or above normal, which is when we start feeling symptoms, such as pain, indigestion, and sleeplessness to name a few.

Don’t wait, stop procrastinating, for there is no time better than now, to take back control of your health, make smart choices and start living a more active health conscious lifestyle this summer season!

The mind-body connection is what today's wellness movement is surrounding. In order for you to be as healthy as possible, you must first undertand how this system works.

Starting from your brain, it connects and communicates with every bone, organ, tissue and cell in your body directly or indirectly through your central nervous system. Just like some serious spinal injuries such as paralysis, there are less serious injuries to the spinal cord called subluxations.

These subluxations, although significantly less than paralysis, can cause long term affects on teh body and its overall health.

Chiropractic care is the tool needed to ensure that your nervous system is maintained and functioning at it's optimal level. understanding this vital system, the mind-body connection, can help you and your family to improve your overall quality of life from above, down, inside and out.

Knowing that there is no guarantee to be free from injury, sickness or disease while under chiropractic care, you are giving your body the advantage if sickness, injury or disease arises to heal quickly and have an optimally functioning immune system. Since chiropractic care is safe, low-force, and extremely effective people of all ages find it enjoyable and value their care immensely.

It is sad that most people wait until symptoms have taken oer and they are very sick before seeking healthcare. Rather than seeking health care when alrady sick, take the responibility to prevent dis-ease, pain and sickness, and manage your health effectively through chiropractic care. Your friends and family may also be suffering from some symptoms, make the health of yourself and your loved ones a priority, and bring them into the office. Your Body, Your Health, Your Future...You Decide!

Having the correct backpack is vital to your childs success this upcoming school year. Although it is very tempting, especially in todays economy, to go for the value bag, you must remember your childs spine and posture are depending on a quality pack.

Make sure that the pack, whether it is Batman, Justin Bieber or Northface it has the following features in order to ensure your child's back, spine and posture are all in check:

~ Two wide (2'+) straps
~ Padded straps
~ Lumbar support
~ Bag sits just above the buttocks along the small of the low back
~ Weight does not exceed 15% of their body weight
~ Bag is carried on both shoulders, vs. one strap on one shoulder

Although this may seem trivial, just remember that the choices you and your child make now will effect the rest of their lives. Postural instability does not happen overnight. Some postural abnormalities that could result from the long term incorrect use of a backpack along with the abnormal sitting postures of the classroom are, but not limited to, forward head carriage, a high shoulder or hip, and over eggagerated curve of the lumber spine (low back).

It is recommended that children from age birth on get chiropractic checks monthly in order to ensure proper alignment as well as full nervous system function. We are here to help. It is just as safe and normal practice for children to be adjusted as any adult. Adjustments are fantastic preventative tools, so don't let back pain be the only thing that brings your family in. Being proactive in keeping your spine in line will help to prevent any occurrences of aches and pains, or worse.
